People, being predictable, walk up to the door of a house or apartment, knock, and then look down. Not for very long, mind you, but watch and you will see that everyone glances down at their feet the second after they ring a door bell or knock. While a door mat might not be the window into a person’s soul, they do reveal a bit of one’s personality. The absence of a mat tells you that this abode is just a house and not a home. Seasonal mats, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Fourth of July, reveal a sentimental person, who probably enjoys scrapbooking or stamping. Come across a sports mat, especially a ratty one, and you found someone who knows how to bar-b-que. A mat with a beach scene indicates the person wishes they lived somewhere else. Find a monogrammed mat, especially those with more than one letter, and you got yourself some newlyweds. The mats with cute sayings from the dog or the cat, indicate that these people aren’t just animal lovers, but they probably prefer their pets over people. You know you found someone who needs a little more attention when you spot a mat that says “Go Away.” It’s kind of like a girl asking her date, “Does this dress make me look fat?” Just as she is fishing for a complement, the person with the “Go Away” mat really wants more visitors. Also, you will almost never find a welcome mat with a pretty house or garden in front of a pretty house or garden. Wishful thinking, I guess. The neat freak, or someone with lots of kids, will purchase mats with names like “The Clean Machine” or “Waterhog.” Those who purchase ones with quips like, “Wow, nice underwear,” or “Hi, I’m Mat,” usually are a lot less funny than their door mats. A mat that simply states “Welcome,” indicates a person who likes to get straight to the point or someone who doesn’t like to challenge the social norm. So, when it comes to purchasing your first door mat, remember it’s not just a scrap of carpet, it’s a revelation. |
